VETERANS from the Borders have been asked to share their memories of a World War Two training camp ahead of a major event.

Newbattle Abbey College, near Dalkeith in Midlothian have put out a call to any Borderers who were in the area between 1939 and 1948, to share their experiences.

They are also invited to attend a free event at the college, housed in a former Cistercian monastery dating from the 16th century.

Project leader Charlotte Johnson said: "I interviewed eight veterans, aged between 89 and 97 and it was great to hear them reminisce and bring back to life what is largely a forgotten story. I hope we can find some Borders veterans to tell their stories.

"One woman gave me a beautiful doll in ATS uniform which she knitted for her daughter while at the college and another man gave me his father's military jacket and a photograph of him wearing it in a line-up outside the college. I have spoken to wireless operators, military drivers and hairdressers - it's been so interesting."

The college's exhibition "Putting on the Blitz" will take place on Saturday, September 10 from 10am to 4pm and admission is free.
