SOME special sporting guests will be in Peebles tonight (July 14) as part of a fundraiser for the town's football team.

The annual event will see the current Rovers outfit take on some a team of club legends, bolstered by three St Johnstone Scottish Cup Winners – Liam Craig, Steven MacLean, Murray Davidson.

Bona fide Berwick Rangers legend Steven Notman will also take part at the Whitestone Park spectacle.

Entry is by donation with a percentage of takings on the evening going to the Peeblesshire Foodbank.

Rovers boss Ger Rossi said: “We are hoping to attract a decent crowd for the game on Friday night.

“Last year we played Celtic but this time we thought we’d try something different so we pulled in a few favours and the St Johnstone players Liam Craig, Steven MacLean and Murray Davidson and former Berwick Rangers captain Steven Notman have all agreed to take part.

“And they will be joined by a few of the Peebles Rovers old guard. I’m sure it will be an interesting event and a half decent game.

“A percentage of the money raised will go to the Peeblesshire Foodbank which is a very deserving organisation. It’s sad that in this day and age they are still needed but the world would be a lot poorer without them.

“Playing the game on a Friday night will allow fans who would normally be busy of Saturdays to attend and I hope a lot of families come along.”

The game kicks off at 7pm.

Meanwhile, Rovers continued their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 victory over Langlee Amateurs at Netherdale on Tuesday night.

Grant Wilson opened the scoring in the second minute with a superb 25-yard effort.

Then a trademark Ross Lamb free kick doubled Peebles' advantage 20 minutes later.

Langlee pulled one back just before the break and that was the end of the scoring.

Rossi said: “It’s been a very short pre-season but now it’s all hands to the pump ahead of the league starting at the end of July.

“We beat a decent English side W96 who play in the sixth or seventh tier which was a pleasing result then took on Langlee Amateurs at Netherdale on Tuesday night.

“Langlee are a well known Borders Amateur team with a lot of players with East of Scotland and Lowland League experience. And it was a good experience for both teams and they gave us a good test.

“We scored two really good goals, big Grant in particular took his well. He signed from Tweeddale Rovers but has played for Peebles before.

“Then Ross Lamb’s free kick made it 2-0 but they pulled one back just before half time.

“We missed a few good opportunities to put the game out of sight and the game ended closer than it should. But that’s the Peebles Rovers way.”

In addition to Wilson, Rossi has added Ross Coats, a former Hibs and Motherwell youth goalkeeper, to his squad and is looking at a number of trialists to replace outgoing players.

He added: "Mikey Robertson has joined Haddington, Cammy Hanratty has joined Livingstone United and James Clare is off to university in Stirling. I can’t thank them enough for their efforts last season and wish everyone well in the future.”
