THE annual Borders Junior Confined Tournament took place at the Borders Tennis Centre in Galashiels earlier this month and as ever proved to be a fitting end to another successful summer of junior tennis in the region.

Competitors from all clubs congregated at the Tennis Centre over seven days to play for the coveted junior titles that covered 23 different events.

Standout performances of the week came from Ellen Crawford of Earlston who won the 14U and 16U Girls Singles as well as the 14U Girls Doubles. Lachlan Ferguson of Selkirk also won a clean sweep of titles in the 12Us and 14Us and was thwarted narrowly in the 16U Boys Doubles.

The 14U Boys Singles final was seen by most as the final of the tournament, with Lachlan edging a gripping match against Lewis Watt of Gala.

Lewis himself had a terrific tournament, winning the 16U Boys Singles despite it being a higher age grade and also picking up two doubles titles.

A final mention must go to Adam Clunie of West Linton who not only won the 10U Boys Singles but also reached the final of the 12U Boys Singles, again beating older opposition en route.

As well as all of the fantastic results and performances, the junior confined tournament once again gave a great opportunity for the district’s youngsters to compete at a time when tennis is heavily in the spotlight with Andy Murray’s success.

Many thanks must go to all those who put in a lot of hard work each year for the tournament to run, including Gareth Stott (tournament secretary), Elspeth Whitelaw (tournament referee), Christine Lawrie (assistant referee) and Ian Main (assistant referee). Also, to the many volunteers who assist the referees in the day to day running of the event. Lastly, thank you to Live Borders for the use of their facility over the two weekends.
